Website building cost in 2026: what a site costs DIY, with AI, with a freelancer or an agency, what the quote leaves out, and 8 questions to ask.

Website building cost: four ways to build a site and what each one costs

Search for website building cost and you quickly find answers running from tens of shekels a month to tens of thousands of shekels. That gap is not really about the type of site. It comes mostly from who builds it, and from what is left outside the quote. In this article we break the price down by four ways of building: doing it yourself on a platform, using an AI tool, hiring a freelancer, and hiring a studio or agency. Then we work out what a site costs after three years, go through ten lines that quotes tend to leave out, and finish with eight questions to ask before you sign.

Website building cost by who builds it: four levels

The ranges in the table are for a brand website for a small or medium business. They are estimates, from our own experience and from public market data — not a price list.

Who builds itEstimated costWhat you usually getThe main risk
You, on a platformtens of shekels up to about ₪150 a montha template, hosting, a drag-and-drop editoryour own time, and a site that is hard to move to another provider
An AI tooltens of shekels up to about ₪150 a montha draft design and draft text within minutesgeneric content, no accessibility and no measurement
A freelancer₪2,500–7,000design and build, sometimes contentdependence on one person, little support after launch
A studio or agency₪5,000–15,000+spec, design, content, SEO, integrationsa higher price, and packages that are hard to compare

Doing it yourself on a platform. According to the price guide published by Midrag, hosting and a domain for a brand website on Wix cost ₪63–133 a month. That sum, however, does not include your own hours. On top of that, Wix states in its help centre that a site built there has to run on Wix's servers. Which means that whoever leaves, rebuilds.

An AI tool. A tool like this produces a first version of a site from a short description, and it really is fast. But it does not know what your customers ask, it does not check accessibility and it does not connect measurement. An agency that builds with AI is a different thing: the AI speeds the work up, and people are accountable for the result.

A freelancer. Midrag, which covers building with independent designers, puts a brand website at ₪3,500–5,000, with every revision beyond the agreed quota priced at about ₪150 an hour on average. Our own estimate is that the range is wider than that, depending on experience and scope.

A studio or agency. The gap in price comes from the hours: the spec, the writing, the testing, and who is responsible when something breaks. A site with a user system or complex integrations reaches tens of thousands of shekels, in our estimate.

Price also changes with the type of site. We broke the numbers down for landing pages, brand sites and stores in types of websites and what they cost, and what a small business actually needs in its first year in websites for small businesses. There we presented the same ranges from a small business's point of view; here we have broken them down by who builds and what is included.

One-off or subscription: what the site costs after three years

The build price is only the first payment. So compare the cost over three years, using a simple formula:

Three-year cost = build + (hosting or subscription × 36) + maintenance + changes

An illustration, in round numbers: a subscription of ₪100 a month for a do-it-yourself site adds up to ₪3,600 over three years. A site built for ₪6,000 and hosted at ₪80 a month, by contrast, comes to about ₪8,900. The difference, around ₪5,300, works out at roughly ₪150 a month. We have left maintenance and changes out, because they exist on both routes: building it yourself costs you time, and a site built for you usually costs money.

Which leads to the real question: will a professional website bring in more than ₪150 a month? For a service business whose single deal is worth hundreds or thousands of shekels, one extra customer a month already covers the difference.

The second difference is ownership. On a subscription site you are renting: the design and the structure live with the platform. On a site built for you, insist that the domain, the admin user and the site files are in your name. Exactly what to get in writing we set out in how to choose a website builder.

What the quote does not include: 10 lines to check

Costs missing from a website quote: content, images, accessibility, hosting and maintenance

A cheap quote is often simply a short one. So before you compare numbers, mark each line: included, not included, or available at extra cost.

  1. Content. Who writes the text for every page. A quote that does not mention writing assumes you will write it yourself.
  2. Images. A professional shoot, a paid stock library, or photos from your phone.
  3. Logo and branding. A website builder usually does not design a logo. If you do not have one, that is a separate expense.
  4. Accessibility. A legal requirement that applies to almost every business website in Israel — not an add-on. What is required is explained in our website accessibility guide, and the official information sits with the Commission for Equal Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
  5. Privacy and consent. A privacy policy and a cookie banner for forms and pixels, following Amendment 13 to the Privacy Protection Law.
  6. Domain. The Israel Internet Association runs the .il suffix, and registration goes through accredited registrars. Make sure the domain is registered in the business's name.
  7. Hosting. A monthly or annual payment, and usually not included in the build price. The differences between hosting types are in our domain and hosting guide.
  8. Maintenance and security updates. A WordPress site needs ongoing updates and backups. What that covers is in website maintenance and security.
  9. Measurement. GA4, the Meta Pixel and conversion tracking on the forms. Without it you will not know whether the site is bringing enquiries.
  10. Training and access. Training so you can update the site yourself, and an admin user in your name.

In our experience, the lines forgotten most often are content, accessibility and measurement. They are also the ones that cost more when they are added after launch.

How to read a website quote: 8 questions

Reviewing a website building quote against a checklist before signing

Received two or three quotes? Compare them only once each one answers the same eight questions:

  1. Does the price include VAT? Ask for it to be written explicitly — the gap between two quotes can be entirely VAT.
  2. What exactly is the scope? A list of pages, and what is on each page. "A brand website" without a list is not a quote.
  3. How many revision rounds are included? And what an hour of work costs beyond them.
  4. How is payment split? Payment in stages (spec, design, launch) beats paying in full up front.
  5. What counts as additional work? A new page, a design change after approval, connecting another system. Ask for examples.
  6. Whose name are the domain, the hosting and the admin user in? The right answer: yours.
  7. What happens after launch? How long fixes are free, and what support costs afterwards.
  8. When does the site go live? A date, not "a few weeks" — and what you need to supply, and by when.

Our decision rule: if one quote answers all eight and the other answers five, you are not comparing prices. You are comparing a defined website with a website that will be defined as the work goes along.

What is not worth paying for, and what you must never cut

Not every line in a quote is worth the money. From what we see in the field:

  • Not worth it: heavy animations that slow the site down on mobile; twenty empty pages "for Google"; a one-off SEO package with no content; custom design before the message is clear.
  • Never cut: text that explains what you do and for whom; accessibility and a privacy policy; conversion measurement; a domain in your name.

Mistake #1: choosing the cheapest quote, then paying separately for content, accessibility and measurement. The final price ends up similar, and the timeline is longer.

Mistake #2: ordering a large site before it is clear what customers are buying. Sometimes it is better to start small and expand.

What Simple Web does about it

Simple Web is an AI-first marketing agency from Bnei Brak, certified Meta partners and Google advertising experts, working with 200+ businesses and holding 28 five-star Google reviews. We build websites with AI, and people on the team decide the structure, the messages and the design. A brand website starts with us at ₪5,000, within a range of ₪5,000–15,000+ depending on scope, with a final price agreed up front and no surprises. An online store starts at ₪8,000.

The website includes the spec, the design, content writing and SEO foundations, a CRM integration, SSL, accessibility under Israeli law and training so you can manage it yourself. It is ready in about 3 weeks (14 business days). On top of that, every website comes with 6 months of SEO content free (a value of ₪4,500) and 3 months of warranty and free fixes. Hosting with us costs ₪80 a month including VAT, with a 3-month minimum. It all starts with a free diagnostic call.

Summary

Website building cost is not one number but three decisions: who builds, what is included, and what you pay after launch. Compare the cost over three years, not just the build price. Go through the ten lines that quotes tend to leave out, and ask every supplier the same eight questions. Only then are two quotes genuinely comparable. FAQ
In our estimate, a brand website with a freelancer costs ₪2,500–7,000, and with a studio or agency ₪5,000–15,000 and up. Building it yourself costs a subscription of tens of shekels up to about ₪150 a month, plus your own time. With us, a brand website starts at ₪5,000 and includes 6 months of SEO content free.
You can start building on Wix for free, but a business site needs a paid plan with your own domain. According to Midrag, hosting and a domain for a brand website on Wix cost ₪63–133 a month. If someone else builds the site for you, their build fee is added on top.
The tool itself is cheap: a monthly subscription, and a first version of a site within minutes. That said, accurate content, accessibility, measurement and testing still take work — yours or a professional's. At an agency that builds with AI, the AI speeds the work up and people are accountable for the result.
Usually not. The domain is registered and paid for separately for the registration period, and hosting is paid monthly or annually. Ask for the quote to state this explicitly. With us, hosting costs ₪80 a month including VAT, with a 3-month minimum.
It depends on the platform and the scope. On a subscription site the technical maintenance stays with the platform and you update the content. A WordPress site needs updates, backups and monitoring, and in our estimate basic maintenance costs ₪150–400 a month. So ask at the quote stage who maintains the site after launch.
