Startup video production: explainer, demo and investor videos

Startup video production differs from production for an ordinary business in one respect: the video has to explain something that does not fully exist yet, to audiences that could hardly be more different. An investor, an early user and a job candidate are all asking different questions. Which is why "one brand video" almost never works for a company at the beginning of its road. In this article we order the videos by the company's stage: an explainer, a demo for the website and the app stores, an investor video and launch cuts. For each we set a length, a format and a script skeleton, and we finish with a production order for a startup on a limited budget.

Startup video production: which video at each stage

Video production order by startup stage: idea, product, fundraising and launch

The table summarises our recommendations. The lengths are a starting point, except for the app-store limits, which come from the stores' own documentation.

Company stageThe videoRecommended lengthFilmed or animated
Idea or early productExplainerUp to 90 secondsAnimation or AI
Working productDemo for the site and the storesUp to 30 seconds on the App StoreScreen recording from the device
FundraisingInvestor videoUp to about two minutesFilming the founders
LaunchShort cuts for ads15 to 30 secondsCuts from the main shoot
HiringTeam videoUp to 90 secondsFilming in the office

Our decision rule: the first video is the one that answers the question you are asked most this week. If everyone is asking "what does it actually do?", start with an explainer. If they are asking "what does it look like?", start with the demo.

The explainer: the first video for most startups

At an early stage there is still nothing to film: no customers, no impressive office, and sometimes no finished interface either. Which is why an explainer, in animation or with AI tools, is usually the starting point. It also does not date when the interface changes, because it presents the idea rather than the screens.

The script skeleton we work with, in four parts:

  1. The problem. One sentence the audience recognises immediately. Not a statistic — a familiar situation.
  2. The product. What it does, in a user's words rather than an engineer's.
  3. The proof. What already exists: a pilot, first users, a partnership. Only what is real.
  4. The next step. What the viewer does now: signs up, books a call, downloads.

Mistake #1: opening with your logo and company name. The viewer does not know you yet, so the problem needs to arrive in the first few seconds.

How a video like this is produced without a shoot day is set out on our AI videos for business page, and on the tools themselves — their strengths and their limits — we have written our guide to AI images and videos for marketing.

The demo video: for the website, the App Store and Google Play

An app demo video shown on a phone and a laptop

Once there is a working product, the demo becomes the most important video you have. The app stores have rules of their own, so it is worth knowing them before the script:

  • App Store. According to Apple's documentation, an app preview can be up to 30 seconds long, and you can upload up to three for each language. The preview autoplays on the app's product page and in search results, with the sound muted by default. It must show only content from within the app itself, captured on device, and must not film people using the device — fingers tapping the screen, for example.
  • Google Play. According to the Play Console Help Centre, you add a link to a video on YouTube, and according to Google up to the first 30 seconds may play automatically without sound, depending on the device, the settings and the connection. You need to disable ads on the video, and you must not use an age-restricted video.

What that means for the script: the most important feature appears in the first seconds. On top of that, short on-screen text matters especially here, because on the App Store the sound is muted by default, and a viewer who has not turned it on will never hear the narration.

A demo for the website can be longer, with narration. Place it next to the sign-up button, not at the bottom of the page. Examples of a page structure that converts are in our 10 landing page examples. And if you want the demo to show up in Google search too, Google Search Central recommends giving it a dedicated watch page and a thumbnail at a stable URL.

The investor video: it does not replace the deck

The deck and the meeting remain the main event. The job of the investor video is to make someone book that meeting. So it is short, and it concentrates on what a deck conveys badly: the people.

What it needs to contain:

  • The founders speaking for themselves. Not a voice artist. An investor wants to hear how you explain the company.
  • The problem and the solution in half a minute. If it takes longer, the script is not ready.
  • The demo, briefly. A few seconds out of the demo video, not a full walkthrough.
  • Real numbers only. Users, revenue, pilots. A number rounded generously upwards will surface in due diligence.
  • What you are asking for. The amount, the round, and why now.

Mistake #2: producing an expensive investor video before there is anything to show. At the idea stage, an explainer and a good conversation do the job.

Launch cuts and recruitment: from the same shoot day

A launch needs plenty of short cuts: vertical for social, square for ads, and different openings to test. The most cost-effective way is to take them out of the same shoot day as the investor video or the team video. The founders sit in front of a camera once, and the footage serves several purposes.

A team video for recruitment matters especially for a startup, because a good candidate is choosing between several offers. Show the people, the working environment and the problem they are solving. The careers page and LinkedIn are its natural homes.

Planning the shoot day properly looks like this: a single shot list that marks, for each segment, which video it belongs to. That way one day yields an investor video, a team video and several cuts for ads. On the goal and the metric for each video type we have written our article on the types of business videos, and on what inflates a quote, our article on brand video cost.

What to produce first on a limited budget

An order that works for most startups at an early stage:

  1. An explainer in animation or AI. It serves the website, the first investors and the first users.
  2. A short demo captured on the device. As soon as there is a stable interface. It serves the website, the app stores and sales calls.
  3. One shoot day with the founders. Out of it come an investor video, a team video and launch cuts.

What is not worth it: a long brand video before there is a product, and drone footage over the office. No investor and no user ever decided on the strength of an aerial shot.

What Simple Web does about it

Simple Web is an AI-first marketing agency from Bnei Brak, certified Meta partners and Google advertising experts, working with 200+ businesses and holding 28 five-star Google reviews. In video production we produce brand videos, product videos, reels and animation: from script, to filming in our own Bnei Brak studio with professional lighting and microphones, through to editing, graphics and captions. From a single shoot we produce a version for every platform, and we use AI tools to cut both time and cost.

Social videos start with us from ₪1,500, and a full brand video starts from ₪5,000. Animation is priced by length and complexity. A short video is ready within 3–5 work days, and a full brand video within 2–3 weeks. An AI explainer, with no shoot day, we produce with AI narration in Hebrew and English, within 14 days of a closed brief and receipt of the materials, with 2 revision rounds and a full transfer of rights on delivery. Its price is set by scope.

Summary

Startup video production begins with the question of which audience needs to understand you right now. At the idea stage, an explainer in animation or AI. Once there is a product, a short demo that meets the App Store and Google Play rules. And approaching a round or a launch, one shoot day with the founders that yields several videos. That way every shekel of production serves more than one purpose. Want to build a video plan around your company's stage? Book a free diagnostic call with us.

FAQ
It depends on the question you are asked most. If people do not understand what the product does, start with an explainer in animation or AI. If the product already works and people are asking what it looks like, start with a short demo. The investor video comes when there is something to show, and ahead of a funding round.
The app stores set clear limits. According to Apple, an App Store preview is up to 30 seconds. According to Google, on Google Play up to the first 30 seconds may play automatically, without sound. On your own website you can run a longer demo with narration, but the important feature still needs to appear at the start.
At an early stage, animation or AI fits better, because there is nothing to film yet and the idea matters more than the screens. Once you reach fundraising or hiring, filming the founders and the team works better, because investors and candidates want to see the people.
It depends on the type of video and the scope of the shoot. With us, social videos start from ₪1,500, a full brand video starts from ₪5,000, and animation is priced by length and complexity. An AI video with no shoot day is priced by scope.
The founders speaking for themselves, the problem and the solution briefly, a few seconds of the demo, real numbers only, and what you are asking for. The video does not replace the deck or the meeting. Its job is to make the investor want that meeting.
